Swept Away

What allows .US. to be so apathetic to

our fellow’s plight,

To be so callous and cold

as a dark wint’ry night,

While poverty ravages both living and unborn

like the raging waters of a monster storm

Purging whole cities of their unwashed poor,

their frail persons perched behind unhinged doors

that cannot shield them from the violent storm without,

nor prevent them from the certain fate, no doubt,

that befalls all who are without resource

in a society in denial of recourse

from the chilling shock of the drowning wave,

from the chilling shock of the drowning wave?
